Transferring a driving license from outside the EU

Driver's licence transfer

Best to go to experts

Simply have your driving license transferred!

Anyone who has acquired a driving license outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) can only drive in Germany for a limited period of time. The foreign driving license must be converted into a German driving license no later than six months after the official registration of residence in Germany.

If this period is exceeded, the foreign driving license loses its validity in Germany. This means that you are no longer legally entitled to drive here with this document. If you wish to continue driving a vehicle in Germany after this six-month period has expired, a transfer is mandatory.

Step by step

Transcription procedure

To ensure that the transfer of your foreign driving license goes smoothly, you should compile all the necessary documents in good time. Only when you have all the documents complete can you make an appointment at the driving license office in your place of residence (e.g. at the Constance District Office). They will check what further steps are required to obtain your German driving license.

Registration at our driving school in Munich Giesing

  • Make an appointment for a personal consultation or register directly with us.
  • If a theoretical and/or practical examination is required, we will discuss your individual learning plan together.
  • We will support you in compiling the necessary documents.

Completion of the necessary formalities

  • Complete an eye test (e.g. at an optician or at our partner facility).
  • Attend a first aid course, which is mandatory for all driving license applicants in Germany.
  • If your driver's license is not issued in German, have it officially translated by a recognized body (e.g. ADAC or sworn translator).
  • Have current biometric passport photos taken, which are required for the new driver's license.

Make an appointment at the Munich driving license office

  • As soon as all documents are complete, make an appointment with the responsible driving license authority in Munich.
  • Your application will be reviewed there and it will be determined whether you have to take a theoretical and/or practical test.

Preparation for the exams (if necessary)

  • If a theoretical exam is necessary, you can prepare yourself optimally with our modern learning platform.
  • If you have to take a practical test, we offer individual driving lessons to familiarize you with the German traffic rules and driving style.
  • After successful preparation, our driving school will register you for the test.

Passing the TÜV tests (if required)

  • The theoretical examination is taken at TÜV Süd and can also be taken in several languages.
  • The practical driving test takes place with one of our driving instructors and a TÜV examiner.

Collecting your new driving license from the authorities

  • Once you have passed the test or your application has been successfully processed, you will receive a notification from the driving license office.
  • You can pick up your new German driving license in person at the driving license office in Munich.
  • Your original foreign driver's license will usually be confiscated or marked as no longer valid in Germany.

How much does it cost to transfer a foreign driving license?

As everyone has different requirements and learns differently, it would be dubious to give you a fixed price here. In our price calculator, we have compiled both the fixed costs and the variable costs for you. We have even included the incidental costs. This will give you a good idea of the costs involved in transferring your driving license from a non-EU country.

With regard to the additional costs, which are independent of our driving school, we assume no liability for the information provided. Even if we have published them to the best of our knowledge, there may always be changes that we have not included (e.g. municipal fees).

Which tests are required?

The same rules do not apply to all countries outside the EU. Please take a look at the so-called list of states. There you will find out whether and which exams you have to take.

Only under certain conditions. A probationary period is applied if your foreign driving license is less than two years old at the time of transfer. The date of the original issue of the driving license is decisive and not the date of the transfer in Germany.

Yes - unless the country in which you received your driver's license is on Annex 11 FeV or the so-called list of countries. Special rules apply to the non-EU countries listed there. For many of the countries listed there, no test is required at all. A glance at this list will show you what the conditions are for your country.

Once you have officially registered your residence in Germany, you can drive with your foreign driving license for a maximum of six months. After that, it is no longer valid and you are not allowed to continue driving without a transfer. If you have exceeded the deadline, you should take care of the transfer as soon as possible to avoid legal consequences.

If you need your transfer urgently (e.g. for your job), you can ask the driving license office for priority processing. In some cases, accelerated processing is possible, for example through express procedures or special examinations. We will do everything we can to get you to your destination as quickly as possible.
